Response to Kenpo 601

Thank you all who sent your comments in about K-601. The response has been very positive. I received one from Si-Gung Steve LaBounty who said he likes the writing style. More importantly, he said he considers himself to still be a student, which is what I feel every day.
It's great to get notes of appreciation like that, and all those I get from people who buy and read the books, then take the time to write and let me know how much they help. That's why I wrote them.

Kenpo Karate 601

My next book, Kenpo Karate 601, is done! I'm waiting for them to be delivered to me from the printer in Ohio. I think I may have them by late next week.

This book covers Form Six, a high level black belt form. In addition, I wrote a section on how to do a thesis form for intermediate and advanced ranks. This is the last of the numbered books. The next one is about Ed Parker, and it's coming along fast.

Good News! The book is AT the printers and is being processed as we speak. I was told it would be on my doorstep by the middle of July and I'll have it promptly out into the mail to all of you.
I have updated the site as well. If you would like to order additional copies of the book, there is a paypal link and/or snail mail address you can send payment to for it.
The price is $15 with no shipping added only until I get the book in my hot little hands. That price is for pre-order only. After that, the price goes up (except for those interested in re-selling at their school) and shipping will be added. So order now for the best deal. Also, the pre-orders will be the first ones in the mail. The book is over 300 pages and is going to look amazing. New stuff

First, Kenpo Karate 601, on Form Six, is almost ready to go to the printer. Mike Squatrito has been working diligently to get the photos set up and told me he's done. Hopefully it will go to the print shop in the next two weeks and be out by early July. Pre-orders will be available on my website soon.

I'll write the section on Ed Parker's Kenpo. The deadline is Oct 1, but I don't know when the book will be out. If you follow the link above you'll see that it's an expensive book, aimed at libraries and research centers. I have John Corcoran to thank for the recommendation to the editor.

Kenpo Karate 601 update

Kenpo 601 is almost ready to go to the printer. I'm hoping it will be out by May. Preface by Chicago's Kurt Barnhart, cover by Ed Parker Jr. This will be the last of the form book series. Let someone else write Seven and Eight, 201 thru 601 took six years.

Kenpo Karate 601 update

K-601 is close to wrapping up. The photos have been shot, the writing is done, and Ed Parker Jr is working on the cover. Now it's a matter of dropping the pictures in place and adding the preface. The preface is being written by Kurt Barnhart of Chicago. Kurt is my most long-time student and one of my oldest friends. We've known each other for about 30 years. I'm happy he agreed to write it for me.
Another good friend of mine, Frank Triolo, is also one of my black belts. Frank is a lawyer and wrote and submitted a piece for the book that touches on the legal aspects of self-defense related to the weapon techniques.
With a little luck the book will be out by April or May. I'll keep you posted.

Kenpo Karate 601

While K-501 will be out around Thanksgiving, I've been working on K-601. I'm down to a few items needing completion. Ed Parker Jr is working on a cover design. I'll be shooting the photos soon, too. And my long-time friend and student Kurt Barnhart of Chicago will write the preface.
Kurt runs a small club in Burbank, a Chicago suburb, at the Japanese Cultural Center. He's been a student since I opened my school in Palos Hills, IL in 1976. His credentials include experience in Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, fifth black in Kenpo, and he's a certified yogi. Kurt took the helm once I left Chicago in 1991 and has been keeping the guys together since. I value his contribution to my next book. I ambitiously thought I could get the book out by December but with the delays on K-501, that's not going to happen. Maybe spring.
Another project I am working on is Lessons with Ed Parker and it's coming along well. This book will include his stories and my experiences with him over the decade-plus I worked with him. I'm excited about it. I'd like to hear from you about what sort of things you'd like to see in a book like this. So far, I've written it as being based on my notes from my lessons and then expanded on those notes by using examples of actual stories and applications on the mat and off. I think you're going to like this.

Fresno PDS

The seminar at Graham Lelliott's school in Fresno, CA was a success. It's always a pleasure to visit and work Graham and his group. Graham is a real people person and has been a friend for years. That said, his people are like him as well and you can't not have a good time with them.


Most of the group was from Fresno but we had some people who drove for many hours to attend. Tim and Deb Maynard came down from Concord, CA and Amy Long was there from Sacramento.

Afterward on that Saturday we had a birthday party for Graham. A party at Graham's is more like a county fair than a party. It was good to have a chance to hang out and talk with Doug, Juan, Tim, Deb, Amy, Pete, David, Coleman, Patty, Kim, and more.

On Sunday, the "old man" and I took a ride out to King's Canyon to see the sequoias. Graham has access to a Porsche 911SC, so you can imagine what fun we had with that in the mountains. He pointed out a coyote on the way back, which was the first I'd ever seen, being a city boy.

The plan is for me to go back in early December to follow up last weekend's weapons seminar with Form Six, building on what we did. Watch for a date.

They came, they saw, they conquered

I held one of my Professional Development Seminars at the Celebration Hotel, near Orlando, yesterday. The group was composed of people from both North and South Carolina and Florida.
The subject was Form Six. All but one had learned the form, and that one person hung in with the group enough to get the sequence and come away with something to work on. It took a solid 5 hours to get through the form. The group was small enough (which is the point of my small-group seminars) that everyone got their questions answered, and got attention. This enabled me to help fix mistakes, make suggestions, and personalize the instruction.
The response was very good and everyone said is was very helpful, even to the extent of using the word "enlightened". They worked, and we went home tired. I really enjoy teaching these seminars.
My next PDS will be in the Atlanta area on Saturday, August 25 at Keith Mathews Karate in Canton. Subjects have been tentatively set and will be posted on my website shortly. www.leewedlake.com.
